I've just launched a consulting firm aimed at assisting university departments increase their income through a variety of sources. Having experience in the Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical industry but tired of being a lab rat, I explored the possibility of using my abilities in scientific communications and writing, my technical knowledge, and my large contact base in a new career. After some searching, it became clear that there was an unmet need within university departments: these places need someone to help secure funding. There are a number of ways to approach this via government grants and industry collaborations, and my company will explore all avenues in these fields to generate income. I have already begun this, having the National Institutes of Health in the US and the University of Adelaide in Australia as current clients. But being new to Australia, my aim is to branch out to other universities and possibly industry as well. And I need an eye-catching logo to make my business memorable to potential clients.
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
I will mostly be targeting the academic arena, and within that, biotechnological, pharmaceutical, medical, and bio-related departments; plus, as a Chemical Engineer, I will aim to establish clients within different engineering fields, too. I may also explore the possibility of targeting companies within the Biotech/Pharma industry if there is a need for my services in that sector.
My first design for this business was taken from the VistaPrint website (see the attachment) and features a chain with several links. Given that I'm an engineer/scientist and I'm "linking" the academic world to external partners, I thought that was a good start. I'm not completely certain, however, and am open to suggestions. But again, my message is that I'm linking or connecting my clients to new collaborations and new (and potentially novel) funding sources. I'm also offering other services (see attached) but everything I provide aims to increase the visibility/profile and ultimately income of a university department.
