VRI fencing club has had at least one member compete at each Olympic Games since 1956. VRI started in 1949 as the Victorian Railway Institute Fencing Club, with training held at the Flinders street Station Ballroom in Melbourne. Many of the people who fenced at VRI in the beginning had immigrated from Hungary. Now located in Richmond, VRI is one of the most successful fencing clubs in Australia. With 9 permanent electric pistes located over 2 floors, we have facilities for all types of modern fencing - Epee, Foil, Sabre and Pentathlon. Our accredited coaches run a full range of school, group, and individual lessons, catering to all ages and experience - from complete beginners to Olympians. Fencing is a fast and intense sport that requires speed, skill, agility, control, and a tactical brain- it is also lots of fun.
VRI will be moving to a newly developed and high-tech venue at the Richmond Football Club in 2010. We want to update the clubs image and create an exciting buzz about the club and the sport of fencing in Melbourne.
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
Our market is very broad - we cater for school kids and parents, teenagers who are looking for something different to try other than the standard sports of AFL or netball. We have a lot of mature fencers over 25 to 70 years old who try the sport for the first time. Most of our fencers are career minded people in various professions ie Doctors, Lawyers, IT, Arts, and many of our junior fencers study at University. We also want a professional logo that will help attract corporate sponsorship for the club and be a strong image that people who don't know about fencing will understand.
We want our logo to represent the energetic nature of the sport; but to be modern and edgy, as well as showing our new allegiance with the Richmond Football Club. We would also like some kind of representation of the 3 swords that are fenced at VRI - epee, foil and sabre. Our current logo has a fencing man, but this does not have to be retained, along with "since 1949" and our original club colours of royal blue and yellow.... the black, yellow and white of Richmond FC may also be used.
