Otto’s Burger is a tiny family-run German restaurant chain offering a casual dining service with a focus on hamburgers. It started life in 2013 as a pop-up in Hamburg, bringing 'gourmet burgers' to northern Germany using brioche buns and homemade sauces.
Having seen the burger boom in London, we felt it was high time that Hamburg, too, had a hamburger to be proud of. We therefore gave our restaurant the name Otto’s Burger after Otto Kuase, considered by some to be the creator of the hamburger in Hamburg, Germany. In 1891, he was celebrated for a sandwich made with a beef patty cooked in butter, topped with a fried egg. The German sailors brought the recipe to the United States, where the egg was dropped. Thus, the word “Hamburger” is derived from the city “Hamburg.”
We focus on good quality meat and classic adornments, but, with a twist. For example, our red onions are brined and our homemade mayo has a smoky taste. But it’s not only our sauces which are homemade. Our lemonades are also handmade by us and we have our own beers, which complement our extensive range of other German and foreign craft beers.
We source good beef from local farms we know and trust. We prefer to cook our burgers medium so it’s pink, juicy and succulent. We place it in a soft, squishy brioche bun (which are made according to our recipe and just for us) with minimum fuss and fanfare. We serve it with a smile in comfortable environment which we still design ourselves.
