Awesome Tower (tentative title) is an educational app aimed at teaching kids basic single-digit addition.

We want you to design a main gameplay screen for a game that aims to teach kids about adding single-digit numbers. We're looking for a playful, cartoony look. We would like each layer to have some detail to it (http://quick-markup.com/p/5080b69f21017). Please see a pencil sketch at http://goo.gl/V9bDR . We need the following components (which are all labeled in the sketch above): 1. Background landscape This should be either: a) a blurred photo that you took yourself or b) an extremely simple line art drawing (possibly blurred) 2. Building outline This is the outline of the building’s shape, it should be a thick, chunky, dotted outline that hints “a building could fit in this space”. We would like the outline to be cute. Target a building size of 10x10 units. 3. Building This building will get constructed during the course of gameplay. it should start off as a dotted outline, and get filled in by the player. ideally each building is made of pieces. we’re targeting a block size of 100x100 pixels for now. make any building that you think looks cute. Please show the whole building as semi-transparent in your submission. 4. Pieces The pieces are blocks that will be combined by the player to make the floors of the building, they should be made of abstract building materials (ie blocks of assembled bricks, girders, trusses, wood planks) (these textures should either be very large horizontally or tile horizontally) The pieces need to be able to be any size from 1x1 to 10x1 but with a reasonable-looking edge, it would be best to make a left, middle, and right border that can be applied over a larger piece texture. 5. Piece divider Pieces should have a layer that can be applied to them that breaks them into discrete “blocks”. for example, with the layer, (like this: http://goo.gl/vEdx9 ) 6. Cables holding pieces Pieces will be held with a crane hook and cable that goes up past the top of the screen for the game (implying there’s a crane somewhere overhead holding the piece) 7. Number labels over pieces Each piece will have a number label over it ranging from 1-20. please make a label that can accommodate a number as large as “10”. the numbers will be modern-looking (no lowercase numbers with descenders) 8. Scaffold (left/right edge) A scaffold will indicate where pieces can be placed, it should be made of wood or metal and have a left and right side, and a repeatable bottom. There is no need to make the middle pieces shown the picture, they will not be used in the final design. 9. Scaffold number label The scaffold needs a number label similar to the piece label, it can look like anything, just has to hold a number as large as “20”. ---------- Final image should be one AI or PSD (AI preferred) file with each component in a different layer. Layers will be: background, building outline, building, piece(s), piece divider, cable, number label, scaffold, scaffold number label Feel free to just have pieces floating around underneath your composited design, I know they won't all fit neatly into one image. Gameplay: For each level, the kid will construct an entire building -- one row at a time. Pieces of different lengths will appear at the top of the screen (suspended by the crane hooks) and then the kid will choose which one(s) fit in the available space on the building below. (For some rows, the entire row must be filled with multiple pieces. For other rows, parts of the row may be filled already.) If you think about it, it's kind of like Tetris -- you have to fill up the available space in a row before going on to the next one. Sometimes the pieces hanging from the hooks will be small (1-2 units), and other times they'll be larger. So for each row, the kid will drag a piece from a crane to the building, where it will snap into place. Let me know if this is unclear -- I'll be happy to clarify more if necessary.
Please no photorealism, it should look cartoonish. For background elements, try to avoid bright colors and high contrast. Avoid using red/green contrast to signify differences.
