I am a neonatologist (doctor for newborn babies) in Stockholm/Sweden and have written a book about newborn babies and the first weeks of life. The book is written in Swedish. I can email the manuscript to interested designers, see my contact info below. The title of the book is the ”Child’s first medical book” (Swe. ”Barnets första läkarbok”) and the target audience is couples awaiting their first child. The book is short; the ready-made book will cover approx. 70 pages in A5 format (210 x 148 mm) and be possible to read in less than two hours. I have focused on the normal and well newborn baby, what happens just after delivery, the stay on maternity ward, the medical examination (”well baby check”) and common minor medical problems, which sometimes lead to observation/treatment in the neonatal care unit (NICU).

In addition to a cover image, I would like 32 simple illustrations to enhance the reading experience. However, this contest is only about the cover image and illustration #26 (NICU environment, see attached file for explanation). I would like participating designers to upload these two illustrations as two separate images. After the contest and for an additional honorarium of 1200 USD, the winner will then complete the remaining illustrations in the same “style”. Final deadline for hand-over of the complete set of illustrations is 15/3. Money transfer will be done through Paypal, or through transfer to bank account. Style and format: I would like to see naive, colourful, sketchy, swift, schematic illustrations, with a white background. I do not want any “medical” details unless specifically stated (illustrations #4 and #5). After the contest, I want illustrations delivered in Adobe illustrator- and PNG-format (the latter with transparent background, i.e. no background colour). Origin is not important; it is better if infants/adults are just “human beings” with no specific skin colour. It is also good if infants and adults are “gender-indifferent”, i.e. not specifically showing who is a girl/mother and who is a boy/father. Please note that the photos attached to each explanation should be used for inspiration, i.e. the illustrations do not need be replicas of the photos.
