I started with the quintessential daredevil feat, car-jumping! But instead of leaping over cars on a motorcycle, this daredevil dad is taking the pram for a spin.")

The heraldic shield in the center of the illustration encases an open book, borrowing a trope from the crests of Harvard and Yale. Sitting atop the shield is the lamp of learning, an ancient symbol of knowledge (literally \"enlightenment\"). An unfurled banner bearing the date of Berkshire Hathaway's inception cradles the bottom of the shield.
In addition to these more traditional elements, I included a few tongue-in-cheek details, like the Berkshire Hathaway initials in place of the Alpha and Omega, and a dollar sign (for obvious reasons!).")

Call me old school, but the lettering in the logo was drawn by hand—no fonts here! It's 100% original. I also wanted to create a logo that was memorable. Merging the capital \"G\" with an upward pointing arrow solidifies the brand and creates a point of interest that makes it stick in the viewer's mind. The arrow's 45° angle is echoed throughout the terminals of the \"L\" the \"F\" and the \"T\" to tie it all together.")

Paired with the text, the logo creates a powerful lockup that maintains its integrity in both large and small applications, from billboards to business cards.")

I was inspired by some of the old designs on the steins in the restaurant (whose name means \"lion brew\"). The angular lines of the lion harken back to one of Löwenbräu's old logos from the mid-20th century.")

The lettering used for the main logo is not a font. I crafted each glyph by hand! I really wanted to create something special, and the best way to do that is to make it as unique as possible.
By using flat colors without gradients, the logo can be used in many applications (screen printing, embroidery, vinyl cut signs, etc.). Plus whenever the logo is faxed or printed in black and white only, it won't lose any of its integrity because the shapes are solid.")

I sketched and scribbled and scrawled and re-sketched until I found something organic that communicates the spirit of the company. It's entirely unique. No computer fonts here! I digitized my best had-drawn letterforms and recreated them for the logo.
For certain scenarios when a smaller logomark would be desired, the Jot-Ops \"J\" functions great as a standalone branding element. This could be used for social media icons and other smaller applications. Think of it like the Facebook \"F\"...it's part of the main logo, but can also function on its own.")

The forms and colors were inspired by the more simple WPA posters of the '30s and '40s. Reducing the compositional elements to blocks of color keeps the entire piece lively.
I chose a limited palette of a select few colors—not only for ease of reproduction, but also because it harkens back to the limited printing processes that drove the graphic reduction of the WPA style.")
